What is Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout that blends strength, control, and precision using a specialized piece of equipment called the reformer. Designed with a moving carriage, adjustable springs, and straps, the reformer creates resistance and support at the same time allowing you to build strength, improve flexibility, and move with greater intention.

Unlike traditional workouts that rely on momentum, reformer Pilates focuses on slow, controlled movement. Every exercise is designed to engage your deep core muscles while strengthening and lengthening the entire body. The result is a workout that not only challenges you physically, but also improves posture, balance, coordination, and overall body awareness.

What makes reformer Pilates so effective is its versatility. The adjustable spring system allows each movement to be tailored to your body, providing support when you need it and resistance when you’re ready to be challenged. It’s low-impact, yet highly effective, making it suitable for all levels while still delivering a deeply challenging, results-driven experience.

A Brief History

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German-born physical trainer who believed that physical and mental health were deeply connected. During World War I, he began refining his method while working with injured soldiers, even attaching springs to hospital beds to help patients build strength while lying down, an early version of what would later become the reformer.

Joseph Pilates originally called his method Contrology, emphasizing the importance of controlled, intentional movement. His approach focused on strengthening the core (what he referred to as the “powerhouse”), improving alignment, and creating a balanced, functional body.

Over time, his method evolved into what we now know as Pilates, and the reformer became one of its most iconic and effective tools.

Why It’s Such an Effective Workout

Reformer Pilates stands out because it delivers more than just a workout, it transforms the way your body moves and feels.

  • Full-body strength: Every exercise recruits multiple muscle groups at once, creating balanced, functional strength

  • Deep core activation: You’re constantly engaging the muscles that support your spine and stability

  • Low-impact, high-intensity: It’s gentle on joints while still delivering a serious burn

  • Improved posture and alignment: You’ll stand taller, move better, and feel more connected to your body

  • Mind-body connection: The focus and control required turn each class into a moving meditation

Whether you’re new to Pilates or experienced, the reformer meets you where you are—and continues to challenge you as you get stronger.
